What is a 100V Line System?

A 100v Line systems is an audio system that uses a higher voltage to transmit the audio signals over a great distance. The Speakers then have transformers built in to step the voltage down to a usable voltage. 

Are 100V Speakers different from Low impedance speakers?

Yes. They have a transformer built into them so the signal voltage can be stepped down. Usually, the speakers have a switch (or colour coded cables) which determine how many Watts of power that speaker is allowed to use. This switch is called a ‘tap’ and the various wattages that you can select are referred to as ‘tappings’. In addition low impedance speakers can only really be run 20-30M from the amplifier before the signal starts degrading, 100V Line can be run in excess of 400M with the right thickness of cable.

What are the benefits of 100V Line?

The main benefits of 100V line are: 

  1. All speakers can be run in parallel (daisy chained) in one long line from the amplifier. 
  2. You are not limited to the number of speakers you can run in one line. On a low impedance system you will only be able to run 1-4 speakers on one channel (depending on the impedance of the amplifier and the speakers). On a 100V Line system you can almost as many speakers as you like, providing the sum of all the ‘tappings’ of the speakers does not exceed the power output of the amplifier (good practice is to leave 10-20% headroom for the amplifier).
